  England Cricket @ LORDS

Oh, what fun this day was! Waitrose became the sponsor of the England Women’s Cricket Team, and wanted something really special to announce the partnership. This is where I came in. One of our lovely picture editors, Anna Wilkins, suggested a Downton Abbey-themed shoot. Having been to Lords numerous times, I was well aware of probably the most prestigious ‘box’ in British sport: The Long Room. What a venue! Yet vital the shoot didn’t come across as exclusive or elitist, so when sourcing the dresses, we made sure they were all high-street. No fancy designer labels here.

Too many people to credit for this one, but the major players were: Photography by Seb Winter, Styling by Harriet Cotteril, Make-Up by Yin Lee, Art Direction by me.

Celebrity

At Waitrose, I handled most of the celebrity editorial photography. Heston Blumenthal was one of our regulars, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit his triple Michelin-starred restaurant ‘The Fat Duck’ in Bray - but it’s so booked up, I never actually got to eat there!

Waitrose suppliers

Shooting food suppliers requires a certain knack. Firstly, you need to have idea of where you’re shooting. A bee-keeper’s garden is picturesque - but they’re not all like that. With plenty of factory settings, you need to get inventive! The trick was having a strong photographer contact in every corner of the country. People you can trust. Secondly, you need really good art direction - and lots of planning before the big day. Busy food suppliers’ time is precious.

My Weekend

Another great regular feature for Waitrose was ‘My Weekend’ This article invited customers to come forward and tell us about their ‘weekend hustles’ - from the ridiculous to the sublime. My all-time favourite was Dalek man (centre), shot by the very talented Stephen Hayward. We went to shoot his wife and found him by accident. Buy one get one free, as they say!

Photojournalism

A news article about pigs enjoying listening to the radio. Radio 4, I believe, in this instance! A pink leather radio was the only prop needed to make this image work for us!

This man is a fish and chip shop awards judge. Photographed here with kit that tests the acidity of tartare sauce to make sure all is in order. Top job, huh? Shot by the insanely talented Oliver Edwards, Art Directed by me.
